The Arizona sports betting market will open as soon as the state can make it happen. As easy as it is to open a sportsbook pay per head operation, its taking a bit too long for the state to be open to having sportsbooks. But since Governor Doug Ducey signed the legislation that legalizes sports betting, things will be faster.

The Arizona Department of Gaming will be initiating a process where rules for sports betting will be created. They will also be acting as oversight for operators. And since the law also allows for fantasy sports, they will also be the enforcement body for contests and betting events under DFS.

Aside from the law, the state and Arizona Tribes have also amended their gaming compacts. These amendments are signed and now at the Federal Department of the Interior Office of Indian Gaming. The office has 45 days to reviews and approve the compacts. Once approved, it will next go to the federal register, who has 90 days to publish the amended compacts. After which, the compacts will now take effect. Tribes will have 10 slots for sports betting licenses for gambling software and operations.

Another 10 of the 20 licenses will be open to Arizona professional sports teams. So far, there is no online poker, and no online casinos. Keep in mind that the state is known for being anti-gambling, so this law is a pretty big deal in Arizona. Depending on the rules that the state will implement, maybe tribal casinos can expand to offer these, especially online, but we do not know that. This will, of course, be a hindrance in the long term.
